2009 Newbery and Caldecott Award Winners Announced

This is the first time I watched the announcement of the Newbery Award Live. Whether you agree with the choices of the ALA or not, it’s great that they have generated enough excitement about the best of children’s books to have people eagerly checking the announcement, cheering wildly for winners and running to the bookstore for the titles that they can’t wait to get their hands on.

I was surprised by just how many different awards the ALA gives out. This is good. Increases my chances of getting one some day. This also means that if you want to hear who won the Newbery you have listen to all the others, because the ALA understands timing the dramatic moment and leaves the Newbery until the end. As do I. Impatient people have probably already scanned down to the bottom of this article.

The program started at 9:45 and around 10:30 the final announcements were being made. And they are…
Caldecott Honor:
A Couple of Boys Have the Best Week Ever
How I Learned Geography
A River of Words: The Story of William Carlos Williams

Caldecott Winner: The House in the Night

2009 Newbery Honor Books
The Underneath
The Surrender Tree Poems of Cuba’s Struggle for Freedom
Savy
After Tupac and D Foster

AND the WINNER of the ….2009 Newbery Award Medal
The Graveyard Book

Huh. Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson didn’t get anything? REALLY? Laurie Halse Anderson got another award for a body of work, but Chains was unrecognized. Wow.
