2012 Newbery and Caldecott Award Winners Announced

Wow, quite a shocker on the Newbery Medal Award Winners for 2012. Only one of the favorites was an award recipient. In what many people considered a very strong year in children’s books, the crowd gave an audible groan or murmer when it was announced there were TWO Honor Books chosen (fewer than average).

The Newbery Honor Books for 2012 are:
Inside Out and Back Again
and Breaking Stalin’s Nose
and the

2012 Newbery Medal Award Winner is…….  Dead End in Norvelt

For the Caldecott Award in 2012, there are 3 Honor Books:

 Blackout

    Grandpa Green

 Me . . . Jane

and the

2012 Caldecott Award Winner is ……  A Ball for Daisy

As you can see many of the Newbery favorites were shut out, though Wonderstuck won a Schneider Book Award. Here is a list that I compiled as the announcements were made. It is not complete. There are additional Honor books for some of the awards that I didn’t write down in time and even a few awards that I missed entirely (generally the lesser-known ones). Full results are due to be posted at http://www.ala.org/yma, but were not there when I checked a few minutes ago.
